Store Manager Job Description

As a Bookstore Manager, you will be at the heart of creating exceptional customer experience, driving sales, and cultivating a vibrant team environment that reflects our values.

Responsibilities include staff supervision and scheduling, inventory management, maintaining merchandising calendar updates and plans, events, and other activities. Along with frontline booksellers, you will provide customer service, point-of-sale transactions, basic merchandising and inventory, maintaining the store environment, and participating in marketing, promotions, and event planning, all while providing a friendly, professional, and helpful environment.

Responsibilites

  • Develop and execute operational strategies to achieve sales goals and maintain operational excellence.

  • Oversee inventory management, including weekly ordering, stock returns, reshelving, and merchandising to meet customer demand and reflect current trends, while adhering to a monthly budget.

  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures, maintaining high standards in safety and cleanliness.

  • Lead, train, and inspire a team of up to six booksellers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.

  • Schedule and manage staff shifts, ensuring adequate coverage to meet business needs.

  • Provide coaching and development opportunities, supporting team members in their professional growth.‍‍ ‍

  • Maintain the store environment; keeping the store clean, safe, and comfortable for customers and staff. Duties include dusting, sweeping, cleaning bathroom facilities, trash, and recycling. ‍ ‍

  • Participate in marketing and promotions: contributions to the newsletter, writing reviews, and involvement in upcoming events and promotions. ‍‍‍ ‍

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; 3-5 years of experience in either retail, hospitality, or a related customer service‍ field.

  • Physical ability to perform tasks required: standing hours at time, bending, lifting up to 40 pounds, and climbing as needed. ‍‍ ‍

  • Availability to work mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and at offsite events.‍‍

  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing a team in a fast-paced environment.‍ Ability to take initiative, self start projects and tasks.

  • Excellent Customer Service Skills: includes greeting customers and giving expert advice based on a strong knowledge of store inventory and customer needs.‍‍ ‍

  • Strong communication and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on accountability and results. Must genuinely enjoy being around and talking to people!  Must communicate well in person, on the phone, and via email.‍‍ ‍

  • Basic merchandising and inventory includes receiving inventory, shelving, creating displays, organizing books and other merchandise, and yearly and ongoing inventory.‍ ‍

  • Enthusiasm for keeping up with new titles, reading and writing reviews. A general awareness of the publishing industry will be useful as will a helpful attitude, research skills, and the perseverance to find a book even when the customer isn’t able to provide a lot of information.‍‍ ‍

  • Willingness to lead book club discussions, in-store events, and other activities is highly desired!
